Akhirah graduated with a BS in Human Services from Thomas Edison University and went on to earn her Master’s in Psychology from the University of Phoenix in 2009, and her Master's in Philosophy from Walden University in 2019. Akhirah continued her studies postgraduate and earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Walden University in 2019. Akhirah's research for her dissertation examined treatment barriers African-American women in past abusive relationships confront. Akhirah completed clinical externship/internship hours at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, NJ as Pre-Doctoral intern. Akhirah completed her Post-Doc as a Psychologist in 2023 and is currently studying for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP).

Akhirah has a professional certification as a Human Services-Board Certified Practitioner (HS-BCP) gained through the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE). Akhirah has a background in Psychology, Psychotherapy, and Crisis Intervention. Akhirah has over 13 years of clinical experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults suffering from trauma, anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, conduct disorders, anger, grief, self-esteem, adjustment, and other common challenges experienced in their daily lives. Akhirah has training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Person-Centered Brief Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Akhirah feels that providing a safe space, free of judgement, is essential to helping individuals gain better understanding and discover strategies to improve their functioning and relationships with others. By using a variety of therapeutic approaches, Akhirah engages clients and fosters a nurturing environment for growth. Akhirah enjoys working with a diverse population including geriatric and at-risk youth. Akhirah has provided in-house intensive individual and family therapy throughout New Jersey, in addition to providing services to students within local school districts. Akhirah has academia experience, in addition to clinical. Akhirah is an adjunct professor of Psychology and Human Services with hands-on professional and academic experience at local universities. Akhirah teaches Introduction to Psychology, Theories of Personality, Human Relations, Psychology of Adjustment, Understanding Social Behavior, Social Inequality: Gender, Race and Class, and Marriage & Family. Akhirah also obtained certifications in Measurable Learning Objectives (2017) and Designing Your Blended Course (2017). Akhirah is a recipient of the Joel A. Kobert Adjunct Teaching Award (2017).

Akhirah is authentic in her approach and utilizes an integrative approach for each client. Akhirah is a member of the American Counseling Association and the American Psychological Association.  Akhirah is a sole business owner of Akhirah S. Lewis LLC. Akhirah has a track record of excellence in providing mental health, which has made her into a highly sought after psychologist consultant providing rehabilitation and counseling services for private clients, professional services that include human and social services, community workshops, public speaking, and psychoeducation. Akhirah is also the COO of Innovative Supportive Services, LLC, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the agency.
